ONGOING HUMANITARIAN RELIEF FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

Since September 2025, devastating rainfalls in South and Southeast Asia have led to extensive flooding, claiming thousands of lives, displacing entire communities, and giving rise to massive economic disruption.

In Sri Lanka, the entire nation has been affected by relentless rainfall, widespread flooding, and landslides, taking more than 400 lives. In 22 of 25 districts, national disasters have been declared, with almost 1.5 million people displaced and homes, schools, and community infrastructure damaged.

SSSIO Sri Lanka responded by identifying a few key humanitarian needs to fill for 78 locations, namely, food security, safe water and sanitation, temporary shelter and household support, basic healthcare, education, and general livelihood. Over 7,600 cooked meals, as well as dry food rations and fresh food, have been distributed to 2,785 families, and around 2,400 household items have been donated, including school supplies to over 180 children.

In Thailand, 12 southern provinces were affected by heavy monsoon rains that caused the country's worst floods, with peak rainfall of 639 mm over three days in November 2025. Hat Yai, the largest city in southern Thailand, recorded its heaviest rainfall in 300 years, reaching 370 mm. On November 27, 2025, SSSIO Thailand responded by sending food, cleaning agents, and medicines to a gurudwara in the south of the country for the affected communities.

From December 2025 to January 2026, SSSIO Indonesia conducted relief activities across Medan–Sunggal, Pematang Tengah (Langkat Regency), and Tanah Berongga (Aceh Tamiang Regency) on Sumatra Island. The volunteers distributed 2,571 food packages, 538 kg of rice, 198 liters of cooking oil, and 58 LPG gas cylinders, together with bottled drinking water, basic food items, mattresses, clothing, attire for worship, and school uniforms and shoes for children.

Additionally, SSSIO volunteers delivered three 800-liter water tanks, one water pump, and 30,000 liters of clean water. They also removed mud from residential houses and their surroundings, and conducted health check-ups for more than 200 residents for early detection of common post-flood health risks.
